Welcome to the Upper Valley Whisky Society (UVWS)!

The Upper Valley Whisky Society was founded in 2019 on the social networking platform Meetup (www.meetup.com). The Society formed to provide a safe and friendly environment for individuals who share an avid interest in whisky. That is, anyone interested in the finer nuances of whisky; its history, culture, industry, and of course, its taste.

Initially formed to serve whisky enthusiasts in the Upper Valley of New Hampshire and Vermont, our mission has grown.  In February 2020, we launched the Upper Valley Whisky Society website. It is a membership website. And while the monthly dues are minimal, about the cost of an average dram, we intend to provide quality content aimed at enriching the whisky experience for the novice as well as the connoisseur. No matter their location in the world.

While we will always maintain a free and open membership category, we are anxious to build a community of whisky enthusiasts who will help us accomplish our mission of developing healthy and responsible relationships with alcohol.

To that end, we offer Subscribing and Sustaining membership categories. Our goal is to cultivate a spirited band of dedicated members. The revenues raised through paid memberships will help us expand the Society’s offerings. The fee-based membership levels offer exclusive benefits and access to the resources in the Members Only section.

In addition to posts, articles, and publications on whiskey-related material, we’ll provide you with buying recommendations, reports on new whisky releases, interviews with industry experts, and discounts on Society events, swag, and merchandise offered at Whiskybits online store. (opening April 2020)

FAQS

We live in a busy world.

The average person’s daytimer is chock full of commitments. Making room for another meeting, organization or event can be daunting, especially if you feel that your plate is already full!

We understand that and believe me the last thing we want to do is induce any type of stress.

However, we feel we offer a viable antidote. An opportunity to escape once or twice a month and claim some restorative “me time.”

To help ensure that the UVWS is a group you might enjoy, we’ve compiled a list a questions often asked about the Society. If after reading through the questions there is still something you need to know or understand, please don’t hesitate to ask by clicking the button below. We’re a pretty friendly group and would love to have your join us for an occasional dram or relaxing event.

Heck no!

Our goal is to build a society that appeals to folks from all around the globe. And while it may not be conveinent to attend some of the Society events there will be plenty of value for you in the Member’s Section; no matter where you live.

As our membership grows we’ll do our best to spread society events around, especially throughout New England and New York. And if we do our job well, perhaps we’ll be in a position to open chapters outside the New England region. Heck, we may even go intergalactic!

In the meantime, subscribe to our Open Membership and maybe try a Subscribing Membership for a month or two. If you’re getting value for your dollar, notch it up a level and become a Sustaining Member!

We’re creating a special community here and we’d love to have you join us!

Yes, due to the fact that alcohol will be available to members at the majority of UVWS sponsored events.

Certainly not!

In fact, you don’t even need to like whisky. You just need to be curious and have an interest in the history of an alcoholic spirit that, for the past 500 years, has had a profound impact on the evolution of society. Some for the good, some for the bad. We explore it all.

While the focus of the society is on cultivating a deeper appreciation for the nuances of fine whisky, all types of whiskies, we will also explore the entire whisky experience.

We will routinely sample some of the finest whiskies in the world during our bi-monthly Tasting Events. The Society also offers Whisky Tours to distilleries, “whisky bars”, restaurants, artisans and various businesses involved in the creation, marketing and sales of whisky.

We also have a bi-monthly Whisky Lecture series scheduled that will provide insight into the making and enjoyment of whisky. We will schedule a speaker, host a demonstration, or conduct a webchat with an industry expert. And at each meeting, we will sample and rate a fine whisky!

In addition, we have at least four Whisky Workshops planned to broaden your understanding of whisky and maintaining a responsible whisky lifestyle.

So, no, you don’t need to be a connoisseur, just a person interested in getting together with some nice people and explore the positive aspects of a whisky lifestyle.

There are at least three significant benefits of joining the Upper Valley Whisky Society.

First, the Upper Valley Whisky Society offers a safe environment in which you can enjoy a responsible whisky experience.

Second, camaraderie and an opportunity to spend quality time with some friendly folks. Our members may have diverse backgrounds, but we share a common interest in a fascinating subject, whisky!

Third, knowledge. Whisky is as complicated as it is controversial. We’ll explore topics ranging from making and enjoying whisky, to the role whisky plays in our lives, socially, culturally, and economically.

Also, there are bonus benefits, opportunities to escape the daily grind and enjoy a bit of relaxation and entertainment.

Currently, the Upper Valley Whisky Society hosts five types of events:

  1. Lecture Series (bi-monthly). The talks will cover a wide range of whiskey-related topics.
  2. Whisky Tasting (bi-monthly). The tastings include dinner and a presentation, as well as a nosing of 4-5 top-shelf whiskies.
  3. Whisky Tours– Periodically, the Society sponsors field trips and tours of various whiskey-related facilities. Past visits have included the WhistlePig Distillery, the DHL-Liquor Distribution Center, and the Green Mountain Grain and Barrel cooperage.
  4. Whisky Workshops – Throughout the year, the Society sponsors a series of workshops on whiskey-related topics ranging from an introduction to the art of whiskey-making to how to make the perfect cocktail.
  5. Whisky Showcases – The whisky industry sponsors many product showcases throughout greater New England, New York City, and Boston. The Society promotes these on our website and encourages members to partake in these events.

The Society is also working behind the scenes to coordinate professionally planned Whisky Excursions (vacation trips) to points of interest such as the Kentucky Whiskey Trail or potentially trips to whiskey-producing countries such as Canada,  Ireland, Scotland, and possibly Japan.

We are also exploring the development of a series of online courses, webinars, and podcasts with industry leaders.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg! There is no limit to the type of event or opportunity the Society might offer its members. What we can collectively think of doing, we can collectively do!

Whisky Lectures and Tastings are offered on an alternating monthly basis. Workshops are offered on a quarterly basis and Whisky Tours as the opportunity arises. Whisky Showcases occur throughout the year.

Costs vary depending on the event.

  • Whisky Lectures – price includes the speaker, venue, appetizers, and a dram of a premium whisky to sip during the presentation. Rates vary between $15-$25.00 per member attending.
  • Whisky Tastings – costs include a three-course, theme-related dinner, venue, appetizers, and the value of the whisky. (4-5 pourings at ¾ ounce each) We strive to keep the cost between $25-$35 per member attending.
  • Whisky Tours – the price includes admission to the venue, water, and snacks for the drive. When sites are reasonably close, ridesharing makes the event very affordable, but on longer trips, it may be necessary to hire a driver and transportation. On average, tours will range between $25-$35.00 per member attending.
  • Whisky Workshops – price includes the teacher/speaker, the costs of materials if required, venue, light lunch and dessert, and a dram of a premium whisky to sip during the presentation. On average, workshops will range between $50-$75.00 per member attending.

All in all,  it is the goal of the UVWS to charge reasonable but adequate costs that ensure members enjoy a quality experience and that the Society can economically sustain various offerings throughout the year.

It depends.

If an event is within a reasonable distance, reasonable being 30-45 minutes, carpooling is encouraged rather than renting a van or bus. In those cases where the event is further away, UVWS will attempt to include transportation in the cost of the event. Typically, this will involve the rental of a Passenger Van or Shuttle Van, depending on the number of members attending the event. However, costs have escalated quickly when attendees have gone beyond 12 people.

When planning an event, the Society uses the following guidelines to guide transportation costs.

  • Carpooling –  (events involving five or fewer members)
  • Passenger Vans: (events involving 7-12 members)
  • Shuttle Vans: (events including 10 – 14 members)
  • Minibusses: (events involving 20 –  30 members)
  • Motorcoaches: (events involving more than 30 members)

It is important to note that when transportation costs are included, the value of the event remains the same whether an individual chooses to ride with the group or not.

Members are encouraged to invite non-members to Society events. However, non-member admission is often 25-30% more than a member cost.

Also, members are given priority if an event sells out or reaches full capacity.
