Here is another of my favorite scotches. The Balvenie Doublewood 12. This whisky is first aged in ex-bourbon casks (American oak) for ten years then finished in ex-sherry (European oak) for two more years. This imparts dark amber color and deep, full flavor rich with the scent raisins and apricot. Balvenie was actually the distillery that pioneered wood finishing, a practice now considered standard and widely used by the rest of the whisky industry.

The Balvenie distillery is one of the largest and best known distillers in Scotland. But what is really special about the Balvenie is that they are one of the few “complete distilleries” in the world.

They grow their own barley on nearby lands and they have their own malting floor. Needless to say, they make their own whisky but then it goes into their own in-house made barrels.

Perhaps it’s that self-reliance that comes through in the whisky. It’s confident and full of character.

Tasting Notes —

Color: Dark gold, almost amber color

Nose: Sweet fruit and Oloroso sherry notes, layered with honey and vanilla.

Palette: Smooth and mellow with beautifully combined flavours ~ nutty sweetness, cinnamon spiciness and a delicately proportioned layer of sherry.

Finish: Long and Warming
