“Aye, ye whisky’s not bad lass, but the names ar a wee bit ard to pronounce!”
Many of the names we come across when selecting whiskies can seem a bit daunting, especially the single malt Scotches. At times we may even elect to pass up an opportunity to order a unique dram, else we fear our poor pronunciation may cause the bartender to think we’ve already had our fill.
But rest assured, even the most baffling Japanese malts can be mastered with a little practice. It’s also important to note that while some of us say tomato (/təˈmeɪtəʊ/) others may say tomato (/təˈmɑːtəʊ/) and we’re both correct. So, don’t let it worry you, do your best and remember that after a few drams, even Robert Burns probably lost a syllable or two!
Below is a list of some of the tougher tongue twisters we’ve come across. We’ll add to the list as we find ourselves stumped when venturing out into the hinterlands. But in the meantime, if you have a whisky name you’d like some help with, drop us a line and we’ll do our best to help you out.
